Alberta GST Calculator 2026

Alberta has no provincial sales tax, so the only sales tax on most purchases is the 5% federal GST. That gives Alberta the lowest combined sales tax rate of any province in Canada.

SALES TAX RECEIPT

How sales tax works in Alberta

Businesses in Alberta charge 5% GST on taxable goods and services and send it to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). There is no provincial sales tax at the till, so a $100 taxable purchase costs $105.

Alberta does levy some targeted taxes outside the sales tax system. The most common one shoppers notice is a 4% tourism levy on hotel and short-term accommodation. Fuel, tobacco and alcohol are also taxed separately, but those taxes are built into the shelf price rather than added at the register.

Buying from or selling to other provinces

Sales tax follows the place of supply, usually where the item is delivered. An Alberta business shipping to a customer in Ontario charges Ontario's 13% HST, not Alberta's 5% GST. Likewise, if you order online from Alberta and have it delivered to Alberta, you pay 5% GST.
