How GST and RST work in Manitoba

Manitoba's Retail Sales Tax applies to the retail sale or rental of most goods and certain services in the province. According to Manitoba Finance, RST is calculated on the selling price before GST is added, so the two taxes do not compound. A $100 purchase costs $5.00 GST plus $7.00 RST, for $112.00.

What RST does not apply to

Common RST exemptions include basic groceries, prescription drugs, children's clothing and footwear, and books. Because GST and RST have different rules, an item can be exempt from one and taxable under the other. When in doubt, check Manitoba Finance's RST bulletins.

Registering to collect RST

Businesses selling taxable goods or services in Manitoba generally need to register with Manitoba Finance to collect RST, separately from their federal GST registration with the CRA.
