How GST and QST work in Quebec

The QST is calculated on the selling price excluding GST, so the two taxes don't compound. On a $100 purchase you pay $5.00 GST plus $9.98 QST, for $114.98. (Before 2013, QST was charged on top of GST; that's no longer the case.)

Unusually, in Quebec both taxes are generally administered by Revenu Québec rather than the CRA, so most Quebec businesses file GST and QST returns with Revenu Québec.

Registering for GST and QST

The small-supplier threshold is $30,000 for both taxes. Once your taxable sales pass that amount over four consecutive calendar quarters, you generally must register and start charging both GST and QST.
