How much are probate fees in Canada?
It depends on the province. Ontario charges 1.5% of the estate above $50,000 and BC about 1.4% above $50,000. Alberta caps fees at $525, and Manitoba and Quebec charge no probate tax.
Which assets avoid probate?
Jointly owned property with right of survivorship, and registered accounts and insurance policies with a named beneficiary, pass outside the will and are usually not subject to probate fees.
Who pays probate fees?
The estate, paid by the executor when applying for probate, before assets are distributed.
