What can increase your refund

Deductions such as RRSP and FHSA contributions, child care, moving and union dues lower your taxable income. Credits such as tuition, medical expenses, donations and the disability tax credit lower the tax itself. This estimator includes deductions and the basic credits; claim the others on your return.

Frequently asked questions

How do I estimate my tax refund?

Add up the income tax deducted on your slips (box 22 of your T4, plus box E of your RL-1 in Quebec) and compare it with the tax you owe on your total income after deductions. If more was deducted than you owe, the difference is your refund.

Why would I get a refund?

Common reasons are RRSP or FHSA contributions, working only part of the year, multiple jobs with too much withheld, or credits like tuition, medical expenses and donations.

When will I get my refund?

Usually within two weeks if you file online with direct deposit, or eight weeks on paper. For 2026 returns, filing opens in late February 2027.

Does this include CPP or EI overpayments?

No. If you had two or more employers and paid more than the maximum CPP or EI, the excess is also refunded when you file.
