How HST works in Ontario

Ontario businesses charge a single 13% HST and remit it to the CRA. A $100 taxable purchase costs $113.00. Zero-rated items such as basic groceries and prescription drugs are taxed at 0%.

Items with only 5% tax in Ontario

Ontario rebates its 8% provincial portion at the point of sale on some items, so you only pay the 5% federal part. These include books, children's clothing and footwear, children's car seats and booster seats, diapers, feminine hygiene products, newspapers, and prepared food and beverages sold for $4.00 or less. If you're calculating tax on one of these, select a GST-only province or multiply by 1.05 instead.

Ontario taxes outside the HST

Ontario still applies a retail sales tax (RST) in two places: an 8% RST on certain insurance premiums, and RST on private sales of used vehicles (for example, buying a car from another individual rather than a dealer). Those are paid separately, not as HST.
