What is the TFSA limit for 2026?
$7,000. If you were 18 or older and a resident of Canada in 2009 and have never contributed, your total room in 2026 is $109,000.
How is TFSA contribution room calculated?
Add up the annual limits since the later of 2009 or the year you turned 18, add any withdrawals made in previous years, and subtract everything you've contributed.
When do TFSA withdrawals get added back?
On January 1 of the next year. A withdrawal in 2026 is added to your room on January 1, 2027. Re-contributing it in the same year can cause an over-contribution.
What is the TFSA limit for 2027?
The CRA announces it in November. The limit is indexed to inflation and rounded to the nearest $500, so it will be $7,000 or $7,500.
What happens if I over-contribute?
You pay a tax of 1% a month on the highest excess amount until it's withdrawn or new room opens up.
