Frequently asked questions
How much is duty on items shipped to Canada?
It depends on what the item is and where it was made. Goods made in the US or Mexico are usually duty-free under CUSMA. Goods from other countries pay the rate in Canada's Customs Tariff, often 0% to 18%. GST or HST is charged on the value plus duty.
Do I pay duty on packages under $150?
For goods from the US or Mexico shipped by courier, there's no duty up to $150 CAD and no tax up to $40. For postal shipments and goods from other countries, the threshold is $20.
Why did Canada Post charge a $9.95 fee?
Canada Post charges a handling fee when it collects duties or taxes for the CBSA. Couriers charge their own brokerage fees, which can be higher.
Are there extra tariffs on US goods?
Canada has applied surtaxes (counter-tariffs) to some US goods, such as certain steel, aluminum and automotive products. Check the CBSA's current list before you buy.
