Frequently asked questions
What is the FHSA limit?
$8,000 a year, up to $40,000 over your lifetime. Up to $8,000 of unused room carries forward to the next year, so the most you can contribute in one year is $16,000.
Is an FHSA contribution tax-deductible?
Yes, like an RRSP. Withdrawals to buy a qualifying first home are tax-free, like a TFSA.
How long can an FHSA stay open?
Up to 15 years, or until the end of the year you turn 71, or the year after your first qualifying withdrawal, whichever comes first. Unused money can move to an RRSP tax-free without using RRSP room.
Does FHSA room start when I turn 18?
No. Room only starts accumulating once you open an account, so opening one early, even with no money, starts the clock.
