Frequently asked questions

What is the GST rate in Canada?

5%. It applies across Canada. In Ontario and the Atlantic provinces it is combined with a provincial portion into HST, and in BC, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Quebec a separate provincial tax is added on top.

How do I calculate GST?

Multiply the price before tax by 0.05. To get the total including GST, multiply by 1.05. For example, $200 × 1.05 = $210.

How do I remove GST from a total?

Divide the total by 1.05. For example, $210 ÷ 1.05 = $200, so the GST was $10.

Do I charge GST or HST?

It depends on where the item is delivered or the service is provided. Customers in Ontario, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and PEI are charged HST; everywhere else the federal portion is 5% GST, plus any provincial tax.
