Frequently asked questions
How is my paycheque calculated?
Your employer takes your gross pay for the period, then withholds federal and provincial income tax, CPP and EI using CRA formulas. What's left is your net pay.
How many pay periods are there in a year?
26 for bi-weekly, 24 for semi-monthly, 52 for weekly and 12 for monthly. Bi-weekly is the most common in Canada.
Why does my take-home pay go up later in the year?
CPP and EI stop once you reach the annual maximums, so higher earners often see bigger paycheques in the fall.
