Frequently asked questions
How much tax is withheld on an RRSP withdrawal?
10% on amounts up to $5,000, 20% on $5,001 to $15,000, and 30% over $15,000. In Quebec it's 5%, 10% or 15% federal plus 14% Quebec tax.
Is the withholding tax the final tax?
No. The full withdrawal is added to your income for the year. If your marginal rate is higher than the withholding rate, you'll owe more when you file.
Can I withdraw from an RRSP without tax?
Only through the Home Buyers' Plan (up to $60,000 for a first home) or the Lifelong Learning Plan, both of which must be repaid.
